One of the highlights of the Championship was the Disabled Competitors portion of the Event. Alecia Danch, 1st Degree Black Belt, performed during the Poomsae (forms) competition. Her disability keeps her from speaking much and having trouble walking without falling. She use to have to come to Taekwondo class with crutches and now works out without them. She struggled to perform her Poomsae during the competition, but she fell a number of times. However, she showed true Taekwondo Indomitable Spirit by continue to get up to complete her Poomsae/form. At the end of her performance, everyone in the audience applauded her with a standing ovation because they all admired her Taekwondo spirit. That is what Taekwondo is all about. It is not about getting the highest kicks or jumps in the class. It is about finding something that you enjoy doing and improving yourself in some way, even if it is just a small improvement to the spectator. It is a huge improvement in the mind's eye of the student/competitor. Taekwondo greatly increases one's self-esteem and overall well-being.
